Attaining the Happiness Advantage – Part Three

In parts One and Two of the Happiness Advantage, I outlined the key points made by Sean Achor, CEO of Aspirant and author of The Happiness Advantage: the Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work in a recent HBR Ideacast. In the interview, Sean outlined what is meant by the happiness advantage and offered up some quantifiable research showcasing the benefits of this paradigm shift.

So how do we attain happiness that precedes success? We need to rework our brain, which Sean explains can be done by making some minor changes in our daily interactions.

Start Small

Sean recommends recognizing someone in your environment. When you open your email for the first time in the day, send a quick, two sentence email praising or recognizing someone in your environment. If you do it for 21 days, you will activate 21 people in your environment and make it easier for a feedback loop. What’s more, is your brain starts to recognize that you have a lot more support than you previously thought, and as Sean points out, the greatest predictor of your success and happiness in a time of challenge is your social network!
